Once their was a boy named Ron; he was raised in a foster home with nine other kids and with an evil foster SLAP!
Jess shivered as something wet hit her on the back of her neck and slid slowly down the back of her shirt. She knew it had come from the wicked witch of Westley High, Rebecca James. She knew it was her because just like the name calling and comments about her holey stockings, worn out shoes and greasy hair the spit balls had become a ritual during math class every Monday. The first time some sloppy spit soaked toilet paper splattered the side of her face she couldn’t stop crying. It seemed to take forever to scoop it out of her ear and brush it out of her hair. But now, as another one flicked off the tip of her nose, she just hung her scraggly blond curls over her face and tried to get on with her work.
“Jess, whispered a voice next to her, you really need to talk to someone about this they are starting to hit me by mistake.”
It was Billy her math partner and former best friend. I say former best friend because since Billy had made it on the soccer team hanging out with Jess didn’t seem too high on his list of priorities. It’s amazing how a little popularity can change a person. Jess turned her head to look at him, a tear trickled down her cheek and her eyes glistened. She was screaming for help. She needed her old friend, but Billy just ignored her. She felt sick, her head was throbbing, she wasn’t sure if she could take it anymore, the isolation was unbearable and then it happened.
“Look at her spotty face, I bet she has never even kissed a boy,” said a voice in the distance, Jess froze.
She knew it was Rebecca, she could tell by the squeaky, snarling voice that it was her. At that moment the years of torture, the years of picking, poking and teasing all came to head. Jess swung around, tears streaming down her face.
“Of course I have kissed a boy, you silly cow” Jess responded.
“You liar I know you never kissed a boy” Rebecca said pointing at her with a mean glare in her eyes.
She wasn’t sure why she said she kissed a boy even though she never had and for a moment there was a stunned silence around the class, but just for a moment.
“Ok grease ball who was it? Who was stupid enough to kiss you?”
Jess stood still, silent, trying to think of a way out this ridiculous mess. If as then that her savior came from a very unlikely source. John Lambert was easily the dreamiest boy in school. He was captain of the soccer team, he had big brown eyes, short black spiky hair and he made every girl in the school speechless when he strolled around in his tight black skinny jeans. But today, for some reason he put his title of the most popular boy in school on the line by saying that he was the one that had kissed Jess.
“You kissed it said Rebecca don’t make me laugh”.
The rest of math class went rather smoothly for Jess. The spit balls stopped and Billy was very talkative all of a sudden. He seemed to have a million questions to ask, everyone including Billy was dripping with envy. But best of all Rebecca looked furious. She had always had a crush on John and this news of him kissing me seemed to have scrambled her simple little brain. She was stone cold jealous and Jess loved it.
The next day no one seemed to notice that Jess was wearing one yellow sock and one green one. At lunch time she was even invited by Kylie James to have a smoke behind the sports hall.
“You do smoke don’t you” said Kylie
“Of course I do!” replied Jess who had never smoked in her life.
She spent the next half hour acting like she enjoyed having her throat burning like it is on fire, but it did lead to party invitation. She was on the bus home when Billy came and plunked his butt down next to her.
“We need to talk” he said with a serious look on his face.
“Why would you want to talk to me?” Jess asked.
“I know you didn’t kiss John”.
“And how would you know?” wrinkles were forming on Jess’s forehead. She wasn’t sure if she was angry or upset, she just knew she didn’t want to hear it.
“Jess, I heard John talking at soccer practice” he paused.
“What?” said Jess “What did he say?”
Billy looked up and stared Jess straight in the eyes.
“It’s a scam Jess, Jess looked speechless. It’s a scam to get you at Kylie’s party on Friday. They want to get you drunk and take pictures and give them to your mom and hand them out around school.”
Jess nearly threw up. Did he think she was stupid? Why was he trying to be a friend now? He gave that honor up when he failed to make her 13th birthday.
“How dare you? She said how you dare try to help me after everything you have done.”
Billy hung his head. He was totally ashamed.
“This party is going to be my night. After years of being the outsider, years of being told how ugly I am, this party is going to be my revenge.” Jess stood up and stormed off the bus.
She arrived at the party with a large black book bag hooked over her shoulder, a knee length black skirt and a simple white blouse, she knew it wasn’t the height of fashion, but she had, had her hair styled in to tight blond ringlets that fell elegantly to her shoulders. She felt good. John opened the door looking almost better than usual. He was wearing a navy blue knitted V neck and a light blue Levi’s. He had a massive smile on his face, Jess beamed one back. He tried to hand her a drink but Jess pulled what looked like a bottle of vodka out of her bag.
“Thanks, but I got my own” she said before taking a pretty impressive swig. She followed John into a small back room where she found the wicked witch sitting in a small chair sipping cocktails. Billy seemed to be hiding in the corner with a beer in hand and a frown on his face
“Oh Hey, you look erh…nice,” said Rebecca in her usual sarcastic tone.
Jess smiled and placed her bottle on the small table next to Rebecca. She walked back toward the door reached in to her bag and turned around with a camera in hand.
“Say cheese!” she said as the camera flashed.
“What do you think you are doing?” Rebecca’s face looked rather pale.
“Beating you at your own game said Jess and now, I am going to make you a deal” said Jess.
If you promise to stop the Monday morning spit balls your mom won’t find out about you drinking alcohol and this picture gets burnt”.
“You little brat,” Rebecca jumped to her feet, snatched the camera from Jess’s hand and threw it against the wall.
“I thought you might say that!” said Jess
Suddenly there was a shout from the other room, “Oh snap the police.”
“You didn’t!” said Rebecca with a ghostly look in her face.
Jess smiled, grabbed her vodka bottle and poured it all over Rebecca’s head, “Don’t worry Becca, its only water. I wasn’t going to drink knowing the police were coming.”
Rebecca exploded and threw a fist toward Jess’s face. Jess closed her eyes waiting for the pain, but it never came. She slowly opened one eye at a time. To her surprise there was Billy holding Rebecca by the arm. He threw her to the ground and took Jess through the kitchen and out the backdoor.
“I am so sorry Jess,” said Billy, “I l----,” Jess put her hand over his mouth kissed him on his cheek, turned her back and walked away with a smile on her face not even taking another glance back at Billy.
